European Union, FIIAPP and NAPTIP trains Journalists on Victim-Centered Reporting

Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP), Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi, has called for a stronger partnership with members of the fourth estate(press and media) to strengthen the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.

She made the call at the opening of a three-day media training workshop held in Keffi, Nasarawa state yesterday.
She said journalists and the media are indispensable in the fight to end trafficking in persons not only in Nigeria but the world over.

Represented by Mr Arinze Orakwe, she said “Journalists occupy a very important position in the work of NAPTIP and offers one of the most important supports to us.”

Public Relations officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Amos Okpu, said journalists are major game changers in addressing some of the world’s most challenging problems such as human trafficking and irregular migration and the smuggling of migrants.

“The role of journalists as agenda setters is very important in addressing and creating awareness on some very serious challenges such as the migration crisis currently going on in the Lake Chad area, he said.

He urged reporters to continue highlighting major issues of public interest in order to influence positive changes and decisions that would ensure the progress of Nigeria.

Representative of the International Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies, (FIIAPP), Mr Olusegun Joseph-Sanwo, explained that the workshop became necessary to address bring reporters abreast with evolving trends in human trafficking as illegal trade.

This Workshop is part of an EU External Action Funded Project under the 11th EDF Project titled “Action against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (A-TIPSOM)” and implemented by FIIAPP
