As part of the project, The Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (A-TIPSOM) which is funded by European Union, the International and Ibero-America Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP) organized a two-day training to build the capacities of Nigeria Immigration officers on the New Immigration Act.  Participants were drawn from Immigration Training Schools across River State, Kano State, Imo State, Sokoto State, Bauchi State, Plateau State, Kwara State, FCT and the Headquarters.

Mr Rafael-Rios Molina, the team leader of A-TIPSOM project, spoke at the opening session of the training held on Tuesday, 30th March 2021 in Abuja.

Molina said that understanding the act is vital to the smooth running of Immigration Service and commended the participants for availing themselves for the training.

Speaking at the event, the Senior Assistant Attachee of Ministry of Interrior, Embassy of Spain in Nigeria, Mr. Jorge M. Macias thanked FIIAPP team and European Union for organising the workshop. He assured the Nigeria Immigration Service that Embassy of Spain will continue to support them.

Mr Muhammad Babandede, NIS Comptroller-General who was represented by ACG. E.N Onyemenam acknowledged FIIAPP and commended European Union for providing the opportunity and urged officers to take advantage of the training to improve their knowledge on the provision of the immigration Act 2015.

Babandede also called on the officers to get familiar with the New Immigration Act, as it relates to Smuggling of Migrants (SOM).

In an introduction, the A-TIPSOM Technical Advisor on Governance, Mr. Bello A. Omotosho, said that training is aimed at building capacity of officers of Nigeria Immigration Service across the various Directorates and Units of the Service most especially those with capability to scale down knowledge acquired from the training at the Headquarters/FCT Command and Training Schools Only.

The Action against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (A-TIPSOM) is a project funded by the European Union and implemented by FIIAPP with major aim of reducing the incidences of TIPSOM between Nigeria and European Union.
